GLS headed back to Huron, Ohio with Greg Abbas, host of Away Outdoors. Greg is a very accomplished hunter and founder with his father Fred Abbas of the Bow Grunter Plus. The Bow Grunter Plus is a Deer grunt tube that has a unique feature of adjustment to 4 levels of sound. It is one of the most popular grunt tubes on the market because of it's effectiveness. Now if we could just make that tube work on walleyes.....
We picked a perfect day to head to Huron and reports were the fish were two miles in front of the Huron River. An off shore wind greeted us d we quickly set lines. We fished 28 feet of water and the Pinpoint revealed we were in a large school of bait fish. The bite was slow but consistent with this fall pattern. When we stuck a fish, it was a pig. The first fish came to the net and was about 8 pounds. Greg was exstatic as he had never caught a walleye this big before. Many trips to Canada had put plenty of those 4 pounders but nothing of this size. We continued to turn and run back to the shallows to reset lines and troll back through the school of big fish. On our fourth troll of the day, something wild happened. A monster fish hit the outside Off Shore board and started a tug-o-war like no other I've seen. The camera man had also purchased a fishing licnse so we could run two more lines and I was frantically trying to clear them as this big fish was quickly heading to Toledo! I didn't make it as the two outside boards were tangled. We tried reeling both in slowly but unfortunately the big fish was not agreeable and with one final surge, broke the line between the board and the rod..I'm sure Greg will have to some editing on this part of the tape as a few expletitives were flying around! We turned slowly and trolled towards the board floating gently with the one foot waves and netted it, to my surprise the fish had not pulled the line totally through the releases. I immediately grabbed the line trying to save the lure and felt a tug.. I threw the board to the side and quickly set the hook again just in case, then handed this line to Greg for a little handlining action.
